James Wild MP warns Employment Rights Bill risks job cuts and higher costs for high streets

James Wild MP has continued to advocate for businesses across North West Norfolk, by raising concerns that the government’s proposed Employment Rights Bill could lead to job cuts, reduced flexibility for workers, and added pressure on high streets.

Citing a British Retail Consortium (BRC) survey of major retailers employing 500,000 people, James noted that 70% believe the Bill will harm their business, with over half expecting job losses as a direct result. The survey also found 61% of HR directors fear the Bill will reduce flexibility - vital in a sector where nearly half the workforce is part-time. Proposals such as guaranteed minimum hours could make it harder to offer the flexible roles many workers rely on.

With the BRC estimating the Bill will add £5 billion to employment costs this year, alongside higher National Insurance rates, retailers warn it will lead to higher prices and fewer jobs.

Having regularly visited local firms, and conducted his own constituency-wide business survey to better understand the views of employers, many of whom cited rising costs and workforce pressures rooted in recent government policy changes as key issues, James is urging ministers to reconsider its legislation.

James Wild MP said:

“A British Retail Consortium survey this week of major retailers employing half a million people found that 70% say that the £5 billion a year Employment Rights Bill will have a negative impact on their business and half said that it would lead to job cuts. How does the Minister expect our high streets to cope with that extra cost, coming on top of higher business rates and higher national insurance? When will the Government actually listen to businesses and to the people creating jobs in this country?”

In response, the Under Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Gareth Thomas MP, said:

“The Conservative party has a rather dismal record on support to workers. I gently say to the hon. Gentleman that most businesses that do the right thing by their employees support the Employment Rights Bill. One reason the Bill is so important is that it will help put more money into people’s pockets, and that will have a knock-on benefit for high street businesses.”

James Wild MP Weekly Column on post Brexit European negotiations

Thursday, 22 May, 2025
After a lack of transparency about its plans, this week the government agreed a deal with the EU. I can almost hear the collective groan about reopening discussions about Brexit and I have no intention of going over old ground.
