James Wild MP is urging local residents to take part in the public consultation on National Grid’s updated proposals for the Eastern Green Link 3 (EGL 3) and Eastern Green Link 4 (EGL 4) projects — two offshore electricity connections that form part of the broader strategy to deliver more renewable energy across the UK.
Having engaged with local residents and councillors, James has raised serious concerns about the scale of the infrastructure proposed in Walpole and the potential impact on the local community.
The plans include building both converter stations for EGL 3 and EGL 4 and a new substation at Walpole B, all within the North West Norfolk constituency. These installations would connect offshore and underground cables into the existing transmission network.
James Wild MP said:
“These are significant proposals that would affect Walpole and the wider area. I’ve raised concerns about the scale of infrastructure being proposed and its impact on residents in Parliament and with National Grid. Any new grid infrastructure should minimize the impact on local residents and our countryside and I encourage residents to use this consultation to make their concerns and opinions heard.”
The statutory Stage 2 consultation runs from 12pm on Tuesday 13 May to 11:59pm on Monday 23 June 2025, offering local people and stakeholders the opportunity to comment on detailed plans. These include converter stations, a new substation in Walpole, underground and subsea cabling, temporary construction compounds, and biodiversity mitigation measures.
A public information event will take place on Thursday 29 May 2025 from 2pm to 7pm at Walpole Community Centre, Summer Close, Walpole St Andrew, PE14 7JW.
While this consultation focuses on EGL 3 and EGL 4, these proposals form part of a wider set of infrastructure plans, including controversial new electricity pylons from Grimbsby to Walpole which James has consistently opposed. His priority remains minimising the impact on local communities and ensuring that where infrastructure is approved by the Energy Secretary residents receive meaningful community benefits.
