After listening to local concerns through conversations with constituents, James Wild MP has submitted a formal consultation response raising concerns over the proposed Droves Solar Farm, planned to sit 800m southwest of Castle Acre, and 800m north of Swaffham.
Writing jointly with Mid Norfolk MP George Freeman, James warned that the scale of the development, alongside the nearby High Grove scheme, would see more than 6,700 acres of Norfolk countryside covered with solar panels. The planning system must take account of the cumulative impact of projects. He highlighted the long-term impact on local character, the loss of productive farmland, and the strain construction traffic would place on rural roads.
The MPs also raised concerns about the safety risks posed by battery storage units and the environmental impact on soil health. The proposed site also lies within an area that includes 151 designated heritage assets, including Castle Acre Priory, and James called for stronger protections to limit the impact on these historic features.
While supporting renewable energy, James argues it must not come at the expense of food security or the rural landscape and says local communities should receive tangible benefits if the scheme proceeds.
James Wild MP said:
"Norfolk's beautiful countryside and farming heritage are vital to our local identity and economy. While renewable energy is important, the cumulative impact of projects must be considered to ensure it does not come at the expense of agricultural land, environment, or communities. I have raised these concerns with developers and urged them to fully address the visual, environmental, and safety impacts as plans progress. Proper engagement and tangible benefits for local people must be part of any final proposal."
