James Wild MP raises concerns on sentencing for causing death by dangerous driving

James Wild MP spoke in a debate on Sentencing Review and Prison Capacity on Tuesday 22 October to raise concerns on sentencing for causing death by dangerous driving.

In January 2023, Paul Carter, Lisa Carter, and Jade Mace were killed in an appalling crime when Aurelijus Cielevicius crashed his car into theirs. He was only sentenced to 10 and a half years despite Parliament legislating to increase the maximum sentence for causing death by dangerous driving to life imprisionment.

James has since been campaigning and working closely with the family to urge a review of the sentence and other changes to police bail conditions, the sentencing guidelines, and life bans for driving.

Speaking in Parliament James stated:

"Parliament legislated for a maximum sentence of life imprisonment for causing death by dangerous driving, but judges are yet to impose such a sentence, despite such cases as the one in my constituency in which three people were killed by a driver in a case with five aggravating factors. Will the Lord Chancellor ensure that when the review considers longer custodial sentences, it looks at how victims can get justice, and how the maximum sentences legislated for by this place are applied?"
