James Wild MP is welcoming a wide-ranging programme of community events across North West Norfolk to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day this May. From Monday 5 May to Sunday 11 May, residents in King’s Lynn and Hunstanton will come together to honour the end of the Second World War in Europe through live music, parades, and commemorations.
In King’s Lynn, the Bank Holiday Monday will feature a street party on King’s Staithe Square from 11am to 4pm, with performances from the King’s Lynn Ukulele Club and Sarah Mai.
The main events take place on Thursday 8 May. Wartime vehicles, family activities, and a youth cadet parade will set the scene ahead of live music from Greyfriars School, the Marham Military Wives Choir, and Ashlea Lauren, before a civic procession will lead to the lighting of beacons and peace lamps at 9.30pm alongside towns across the country.
Meanwhile, in Hunstanton, events start that morning with the raising of a special VE Day flag at the Cenotaph, and culminate with beacon and lamp lighting on The Green at 9pm, including the national proclamation. The town’s celebrations will continue with a Fish & Chip Luncheon for care home residents on Friday 9 May, free film screenings, a Gala concert on Saturday 10 May, and a Remembrance Parade and Service on Sunday 11 May.
Other events across the constituency include:
- A scarecrow trail in North Wootton running from 3–10 May;
- A community street party on Windsor Road in Lynn on Sunday 4 May;
- A spring market in King’s Lynn on Saturday 17 May;
- A special VE Day event in Walpole St Peter on Thursday 8 May, with a beacon lighting ceremony at 9.30pm.
Speaking on the celebrations, James Wild MP said:
"VE Day is a moment to honour the service and sacrifice of those who fought for freedom in the Second World War. I’m delighted to see such a strong community spirit across King’s Lynn, Hunstanton and beyond as people come together to mark the 80th anniversary. These events offer a fitting tribute and I look forward to joining local residents in these commemorations."
As a longstanding advocate for veterans and military families, James is encouraging people across North West Norfolk to continue supporting those who’ve served. With experience in the Ministry of Defence, and working with local charities such as Scotty’s Little Soldiers, he highlights the importance of getting involved—whether by volunteering, donating, or raising awareness of supporting veterans.
