James Wild MP joined the local community to mark the 819th opening of the King’s Lynn Mart.
The event began with a procession to Tuesday Market Place, followed by the official opening led by the Mayor of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk, Councillor Andy Bullen, who reflected on the fair’s historic significance before a moment of prayer.
Following the ceremony, James joined the Mayor and others on the dodgems and met with local showmen and families enjoying the Mart. He also attended the annual lunch hosted by the Showmen’s Guild of Great Britain, recognising the important role showmen play in maintaining this longstanding tradition.
Dating back more than 800 years to the establishment of a market in 1104, the Mart has evolved from a trading fair into a popular annual funfair and remains a highlight in West Norfolk’s calendar. Running until 22 February, it continues to bring visitors and residents together.
